Why Are There Trees In Our Environment

Trees such as California's majestic coastal redwoods or the South's moss-draped live oaks sporting life spans of 3,300 and 300 years, respectively, easily outlive their human admirers. However, very few living things on Earth can rival the ancient, dwarfed and knarled bristle cone pines surviving at timberline in California, Nevada, and Utah for up to 4,700 years.

Trees alter the environment in which we live by moderating climate, improving air quality, conserving water, and harboring wildlife. Climate control is obtained by moderating the effects of sun, wind, and rain. Trees also play an intimate role in many of the world's mythologies (see trees in mythology ).

Trees can be classified into two broad groups: coniferous and deciduous . Coniferous trees bear their seeds in cones and have very narrow or overlapping leaves. Trees often have limited rooting space and are similar to large potted plants.

Soil compaction can occur due to such things as construction equipment, sidewalks and streets, and footsteps. Trees are perennials, plants that live for at least three years. Some species of tree only grow to 4 m (13 ft) in height, but the tallest species may reach heights of more than 112 m (more than 367 ft).

Trees are also are the only other creature than man to use fire to kill. There would never be forest fires if it weren't for trees. Trees are not just a key to the natural ecosystem -- trees are an essential part of community life.

Trees are never the same shape below ground as they are above, so it is difficult to predict the length or location of their roots. Typically, however, approximately 90-95 percent of a tree's root system is in the top three feet of soil, and more than half is in the top one foot.

Trees provide a renewable source of lumber, paper, nuts and chemicals. But they are also essential as living filters, removing pollution from the air we breath and the water we drink.

Trees and shrubs that have been dug for transplanting should be planted as soon as possible. Cover a root ball with damp material which will retain moisture (burlap, peat moss, canvas, plastic, etc.) until planting. Trees will stress if routine soil preparation for flowers damages tree roots. Trees that are pruned in this manner are also misshapen and esthetically unappealing (see Fig.

Trees and plants have a kind of flexibility that is both disturbing and inspiring. Left to their own devices they can wrap around objects and create strange works of unintentional art. Trees were as large as people could afford.

Many poorer families still used the tabletop Goosefeather trees, Americas Addis Brush Trees were being imported into Britain, and these became immensely popular for a time.

Surrealism Trees? Art Project?

I am doing an art project and I have to paint a tree but it has to be painted in the style of surrealism. Salvador Dali is a surrealist painter. Anyways does anyone have a idea on what I could do? PLEASE HELP!! =D

Well, arguably surrealists used realistic imagery, just like Dali. He could paint very well. However, he integrated objects you wouldn't normally see in a landscape or a portrait. I would recommend you paint a desert-like landscape with rolling hills (see, already two things that don't belong together!), a tree that is dreamy, yet realistic, with branches reaching out and objects that mean something or hold some symbolism strewn across the tree. You could also paint its shadow in an eerie way with a person looking up at it on top of a unicycle or riding a horse or something completely random. I don't know, just use your imagination! And have fun!

Other Features of the RainSava Rainwater System include:

 

• Smoothing Inlet Filter: Calms the flow of water into the tank.

I want to try the "no-poo" thing, can I still use dry shampoo to combat oil?

I would really love to stop using shampoo because I've heard it makes your hair amazing, but my hair gets REALLY greasy after just one day of not washing it. Can I still use dry shampoo and/or baby powder to get rid of the oil? Do I need to stop bleaching my hair as well since they shampoo my hair at the salon?

Your hair gets really greasy after one day of not washing it because it has adapted to life with being washed every day and produces alot of oil to compensate. It will take time to adapt to not making so much oil, and in that time, it will look greasy and yuck, there's no way around it. A dry shampoo or baby powder might be an interim solution, but they are still removing oil and thus your scalp will try to replace it.

Since your hair is bleached, I'd also suggest that you grow it out before trying the 'no poo' thing - bleached hair is unnatural and therefore has different 'needs' than natural hair - it will need artificial conditioner to keep in manageable and shiny, whereas natural hair doesn't need it. Its all about how to get the cuticles on the hair shaft lie flat - natural hair has flatter cuticles than bleached hair, and will become even flatter if rinsed in an acidic rinse, and if they are brushed in one direction alot - and indeed have a fine layer of natural scalp oil covering them.

You could try egg whites for a shampoo and egg yolks for a conditioner if you really don't want to use shampoo - you don't want your hair to get smelly (which it will if you don't wash it at all) or just was your hair with a solution of mild soap and rinse with water with a small amount of lemon juice or vinegar added one or twice a week instead of very day with shampoo.

Tai Chi - the Most Misunderstood Martial Art

When the small tai chi master from China threw me to my basement floor, I realized the real power behind this misunderstood martial art. I laughed at how easily he threw me down. He laughed, too.

I stood up and we touched wrists again. I stepped at him and again found myself on the floor, looking at my carpet in a whole new way.

I was on the receiving end of a tai chi master's skill and power.

Grandmaster Chen Xiaoxing (pronounced "shou-shing") is a direct descendant of the man who created tai chi. He visited my home for a week and I spent quality time finding out first-hand why so many people misunderstand this powerful martial art.

Around the world, tai chi is used as a slow-motion exercise for health and meditation, but that's not why it was created. Many martial artists call tai chi a "soft" art, but that's because real tai chi is rare in the United States. Every movement in tai chi is a self-defense technique.

The art was created in the 15th Century by Chen Wangting, a retired warrior in Henan Province, China. His family still practices it as a martial art. They say you have to "eat bitter" to develop tai chi skill. Real tai chi training, especially with the Chen family, involves pain.

The idea of tai chi is to break your attacker quickly and end the fight. Tai Chi is practiced in slow motion so students can develop the body mechanics and structure to deliver the self-defense techniques powerfully. To the average observer, tai chi appears relaxed and fluid. Underneath, the body structure gives it an iron-like strength.

I studied tai chi for a decade before being introduced to the real art, and I was stunned at its power. In the years since I began studying the Chen style, as my skill has increased, I've met many tai chi students who have been in the art for over 20 years but they don't know the proper way to move. Most teachers don't understand the "secrets" of the art. As a result, students don't learn real tai chi.

The real secret of tai chi and the "internal" arts of China is simple: these are physical skills that take years to develop. Too many teachers focus on developing "chi," a mysterious energy they claim is circulating through the body. Their students focus on chi and miss the body mechanics that can make them powerful.

This lesson was driven home to me in my basement as Grandmaster Chen kept throwing me to the floor while he remained relaxed. I began to realize what he was doing, and the subtle way he was making me lose just enough of my balance that I could be easily thrown. It was a valuable lesson. After he left my home, I was more determined than ever to keep practicing so I could develop higher-level skill in this very hard "soft" art.
