What Are the Differences Between a Cruiser, Destroyer, Frigate, Corvette and Gunboat?
The way warships are classified tends to be controversial, and there is no set definition for the meaning of a term. Everyone have their own views with their ships. For example Russian destroyers on which I served for many years are known as SNF (Soviet Naval Frigate) in USSR. Since modernisation of navies size of the ship doesn't matter in classifying the ships. However size was the main factor in the early days in classification. Secondly weapon carried and purpose of ship.
The World's Navies classifies the ships as follows:
Cruisers: +10,000 tons
Light Cruisers: 5000 to 10,000 tons
Destroyers: 3000 to 4000 tons
Frigates: 1100 to 3000 tons
Corvettes: 500 to 1100 tons
FAC: +25 Knots
Large PC: 100 to 500 tons
Coastal PC: -500 tons
There are, however, some nearly "standard" classifications that can be applied to most major warships. The designations listed here attempt to be "universal" to the greatest degree possible. Keep in mind that many nations chose to "do things their own way" at one time or another. A typical destroyer built during WWII and still in service and would still be classified as a destroyer, but it would be more similar to a modern frigate, corvette or offshore patrol vessel depending on its level of modernization.
In the British Navy the pendent number is written with an alphabet in front which distinguish what type ship it is.
A - Auxiliary
B - Battleship
C - Cruiser
D - Destroyer
F - Frigate
M - Minesweeper
N - Minelayer
R - Aircraft Carrier
S - Submarine
H - Hydrographic Vessel
L - Amphibious Warfare
P - Fast Patrol Boat
Cruisers: Cruisers are an extremely large and varied group.
Guided Missile Cruiser: Modern guided missile cruisers generally have only one of the traditional cruiser roles--they are either offensive or defensive, but not both. Typically offensive ships are equipped with heavy anti-ship missile batteries; defensive ships have anti-aircraft missiles to defend task forces. Neither type is truly capable of independent offensive operations as traditional cruisers were. A few guided missile cruisers have combined the offensive and defensive batteries in one large hull.
Destroyers: The destroyers have seen numerous changes in role over the years, as can be seen from the descriptions below
Definitions based on size comparison (i.e. a destroyer is larger than a frigate but smaller than a cruiser) and displacement have become meaningless in this category and the same will likely happen to the escort classes (corvettes and frigates) in the next two decades.
Destroyer: (DD/DDG(Destroyer /Guided Missile Destroyer) Small, fast, heavily armed escorts intended to protect the battle fleet, Carriers from enemy surface, air or undersea threats, depending on the era. Destroyers originated as "torpedo-boat destroyers", intended to sink enemy torpedo boats. Anti-submarine warfare was added when submarine became a threat. As aircraft became more important the destroyers added an anti-aircraft role. Destroyers are primarily defensive in nature and generally operate in groups rather than independently. In a modern context, DDs are the major anti-submarine ships and DDGs are anti-aircraft ships, but they retain multi-mission capabilities.
In addition to these defensive capabilities, it can support strike operations with long-range gunfire and land-attack missiles. It is this strike ability, mostly with Tomahawk missiles, that distinguish destroyers from frigates.
Frigates: Frigates are larger than corvettes. They are about the same size or just smaller than. Frigates today are multi-purpose platforms capable of long-range, long-endurance independent low and medium intensity missions. They are with advanced weapons, sensors and computer processing ability to defeat multiple air, surface and subsurface threats simultaneously and surviving in a high intensity environment. Stealth frigates are getting popular in the many navies.
Corvette is a small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship, originally smaller than a frigate and larger than a coastal patrol craft, although many recent designs resemble frigates in size and role.Corvette Small, generally slow escort-type vessel, generally intended for ASW. They are also sufficiently habitable and have the endurance for long-range operations. Best suited for coastal work but sometimes employed as a seagoing vessel. Often seem to be heavily armed for their size, but generally are lacking in things like sensors, electronics, reloads, range and accommodations.
Corvettes have a displacement between 540 and 2,750 long tons (and measure 180-330 feet (55-100 meters) in length. They are usually armed with medium- and small-caliber guns, surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and underwater warfare weapons
FAC: Fast attack craft are smaller than corvettes and distinguishable from similar sized patrol craft by their higher speed (at least 25 knots). They are distinguishable also from inshore vessels by size, being around 50m in length, whereas the smaller craft are 30m or less. Due to their small size, FAC specialise in one discipline and cannot be considered multi-purpose platforms. Most are optimised for surface warfare using missiles and guns, and increasingly rarely, torpedoes.
Battleships: Battleships were the primary warships in the era of ship-to-ship combat with guns. They were equipped with the largest and greatest number of guns possible, and were heavily armored to protect them from similar enemy ships. Battleships were intended to engage in ship-on-ship or fleet-on-fleet combat with forces of enemy battleships. Battleship armor was generally heavy enough to protect the ship against it's own main armament
Offshore Patrol Vessel: (OPV) Modern classification for vessels similar in purpose to the 3rd class cruisers. Intended for duty in areas requiring presence but not major fighting power. Vessels tend to be optimized for good seakeeping, long range, good accommodations, easy maintenance and reliability. Generally slow and seemingly underarmed for their size

The Art Of Listening
Developing strong listening skills is a key element in building collaborative, professional and long-lasting personal relationships. Listening is an integral part of the whole communication cycle. As you move through the levels of listening, you’ll generate different responses from the speaker. To get a feel for what this might mean, imagine yourself as the speaker - how do you feel and respond when someone doesn’t pay attention to you as you speak to them? And how is that different when the listener puts their whole attention on what you are saying? We want it so people will listen to us; they will do it if we will listen to them.
There are five common levels of listening:
1. Avoidance, ignorance. No effort to listen at all.
2. Pretend listening. Giving the appearance of listening.
3. Selective listening. Hearing only what interests you.
4. Intensive listening - with projection on themselves. Paying attention, focusing on the speaker’s words to your own needs, arguments, experiences and interests.
5. Empathic listening- through the eyes of the speaker. Listening, responding with both the heart and mind to understand the speaker’s words, intent and feelings. Listen for what is not being said.
And there is the Sixth Level of listening, and it’s to listening to your inner voice. The concept introduces a new and internal speaker. You can listen to your inner voice. To listen actively to your inner voice you should:
• Try to see and understand their point of view.
• Try to understand if there are aspects of culture.
• Listening through your body language to your inner voice.
• Be patient, hear their thoughts, let them think out loud.
• Avoid responding (you are listening to understand).
• Be with an open mind to listen to what the speaker actually says; what the speaker wants to say; what the speaker feels.
• Keep an open mind and suspend your judgments.
Now after you are willing to listen, you can learn such things as:
• Don’t interrupt, stay with an open mind.
• Put your attention on the speaker.
• Make eye contact.
• Ask open questions to encourage to speaker to continue.
Did you know that it takes 5 characters to represent "listen" in Chinese? Eyes, ears, heart, you and focused undivided attention.
When we think about the ways in which cultures differ in listening skills, we usually use the iceberg analogy. The aspects of culture that are immediately apparent, like food, language, customs and manners are above the surface. Those aspects of culture that are more hidden, that we are less consciously aware of, are below the outside. They include:
1. Communication style
2. Interpersonal relations
3. Attitude toward authority
4. Orientation towards time
5. Attitude towards space
6. Thinking style
7. Tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty
8. Orientation to the environment
9. Values, beliefs and basic assumptions
Those aspects of culture that are more hidden, that we are less consciously aware of, is the key to be an effective listener starting in respecting the other side/ it’s not easy not to be in a judgment mode.
Listening through the body language
Did you know that the human body can produce over 700,000 unique movements? These movements have been partitioned into about 60 discrete and symbolic signals and around 60 gestures, postures, and expressions.
More than 90% of the job interview is conveyed by non-verbal means. You did all the homework for your interview. You know everything about the company, their vision, management style, what skills you have that would benefit this company, and where you expect your career to be in 10 years. Briefly you know all the correct answers to 249 interview questions, but at the end of the day what really counts is the main question: did you have good chemistry? Can they trust your message, and what you can do in order to make sure that they will?
We polish our verbal skills for an interview, but few of us give much consideration to their non- verbal communication and body language skills that support the verbal messages and can make the difference.
Up-to-date research has proven that the large majority of messages are received in varying levels of effectiveness. The impact you make on others depends on what you say (7%), how you say it (38%), and by your body language (55%).
We can read other thoughts like open cards. The thoughts in our minds transfer into feeling that get an emotional expression that our body pronounces in thousand of gestures, postures, and expressions.
Listening with your eyes
• "The eyes are often called, 'the windows of the soul' as they can send many different non-verbal signals.
• Eye contact often increases significantly when we are listening, and especially when we are paying close attention to what the other person is saying.
• Less eye contact is used when talking, particularly by people who are visual thinkers as they stare into the distance or upwards as they 'see' what they are talking about.
• Locked ankles
When a person makes very little eye contact, they may be feeling insecure. They may also be lying and not want to be detected; it also could be as a result of coulter behavior.
Why cards?
Mastering the secrets of the body language might be complicated. Body language is a visual mode of communication- you cannot learn it just from reading- you need to see it. Body Language Cards do just that; they flood your consciousness with the visual gestures and connect it to its meaning.

Abstract Art Creates a Concrete Effect Through Abstract Wall Art
What type of art do you prefer? When selecting wall decor for the rooms of your home, choosing specific pieces can seem like a daunting task. So many styles of decor have existed throughout the history. One of the most common and fascinating types, is abstract one. When we think of it, we tend to think of paintings and sculptures. However, a wide variety of mediums can feature abstract art. However, a wide variety of mediums can feature it.To have a better appreciation for abstract art, we should understand precisely what it is.
The range of meanings of abstract art can be quite broad. However, a precise definition would be: types of Western art of the 1900s, which: A) discard representation and B) have no starting points or finishing points within nature. It is important to note that it is completely a modern form. The reason is that the art itself is abstract. In other words, the abstraction is not based on a particular object or nature itself.
When did Abstract Art begin? Towards the end of the 1800s, artists began to reject the idea of art reproducing objects and nature. Rather, they started to focus on the notion of revealing one's thoughts and unconsciousness. Today, this type is presented in various forms, such as wall art. This did not begin as a specific art form. Instead, it evolved parallel to other movements (i.e. Cubism, Expressionism, and Fauvism).
The Russian painter Vasily Kandinsky often receives credit for being the first artist to paint exclusively using Abstract Art. That was during roughly 1910. Then from roughly 1915-1920, it became more popular due to the Netherlands' De Stijl group.
The idea quickly grew in popularity in the U.S., due to two European exhibitions in the early 1900s. The first one was in New York (1913), while the second one was in San Francisco (1917). During this period, several young American painters, such as Georgia O'Keeffe, began to experiment by using new artistic styles. Between World War I and World War II, Abstract Art continued to grow. In fact, by the 1930s it had become Western art's most typical attribute.
After World War II, the art form Abstract Expressionism had been born in the United States. In fact, it was greatly impacting American and European sculptures and paintings.
In the 1950s, the Minimalism became the primary catalyst of Abstract Art. Some of today's abstract wall art portrays this artistic style. This form was simpler and less personal than its previous variations. Within time, its focus developed into exploring the connection between forms and colors. By the dawn of the 21st century, art forms such as conceptual and figurative art had become as significant as Abstract Art.
When selecting wall decoration for our homes, we have a choice of several contemporary wall hangings. Consider using Abstract Art as a way to spruce up your home's rooms. It can have a concretely amazing effect!

Could somebody tell me how the way the human figure is portrayed in Greek art and the way it is portrayed in Egyptian art are the same and how they are different.and also What would account for these differences?

It is amazing how many students hope that somebody else will do their homework for them. But, I am willing to give you a hint. The figures portrayed by both the Egyptians and the Greeks lacked perspective. In other words, note that both sides of the bodies are about the same size -- not very "realistic". Take it from there and search the Internet yourself. Good luck!

Chinese Night at Home
A good and fun idea for family meal night is Chinese food. Yes, it's one of the few "ethnic" foods that's a little more expensive to make at home than to buy at the restaurant, but the price is well outweighed by the quality of the food at home, as well as the sense of pride that comes with making something at home.
Sweet and Sour Sauce
It's a dipper. It's a sauce. It's the most recognized condiment in the Asian food world. Use it for eggrolls or mix with virtually any meat for an entrée.
Ingredients
1/3 cup white vinegar
1 cup water
1/8 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 tsp Tabasco sauce
1/8 tsp white pepper
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp cornstarch
3 tbsp ketchup
1/2 tbsp minced ginger
1 tbsp olive oil
Directions
In a sauce pan, combine 2 cups of water, white vinegar, sugar, salt, white pepper and Tabasco sauce. Bring to a boil.
In a bowl, mix cornstarch, 2 tbsp water and Worcestershire sauce. Add to boiling mixture and stir constantly until thickened.
Remove from the stove and add ketchup, ginger, and olive oil. Mix well and refrigerate immediately.
Stir Fry
Stir fry has become more or less a catch-all for the American family. It's convenient and fast, so it's perfect for mom or dad on the go. With so many variations it's also easier to accommodate people's individual tastes.
Ingredients
1/3 cup soy sauce or favorite stir-fry sauce
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp garlic powder
vegetable oil
2 tsp dark sesame oil
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces
1 lb mixed vegetables to taste.
Directions
Combine stir-fry sauce, ginger, and garlic powder in a small bowl, se to the side. In a large nonstick skillet add oil, and place over medium-high heat until hot. Add chicken, and stir-fry until chicken is done. Once cooked, remove chicken from the skillet. Add vegetables to skillet and cook. Re-add the chicken and sauce mix. Cook over medium heat until everything is hot. Remove and serve over rice.
Chinese soups are a favorite anytime. Included to help round out your Chinese food night at home is an easy Chinese style soup: Bok Choy Chicken Soup.
Ingredients
10 thinly sliced of bok choy leaves (Chinese cabbage, regular cabbage will do in a pinch)
3 1/2 cups of chicken broth
2 tsp soy sauce
2 tsp of sesame oil
5-6 red pepper flakes
1 garlic clove well chopped
Directions
In a medium sauce pan, bring chicken broth to a boil. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper flakes and garlic clove. Next add the leaves of bok choy or cabbage. Simmer until cabbage is tender. In the case of bok choy cabbage, it will turn a nice green when done. For regular cabbage cook al Dante.
Hopefully, you will have a fun and delicious Chinese food night in your home! So grab a nice movie and curl up on the couch and chow down.

Houston Landscape
The Houston landscape today is very different from the landscape that European settlers found when they first arrived in Texas. At that time, the areas around Buffalo Bayou and its many tributaries was a dark swamp populated by cypress and magnolia trees. In many places, the forest was so impenetrable (and filled with mosquitoes) that even the Karankaway Indians would not venture too far in. Over the years, the Houston landscape gave way to industrialization and residential development. It has never lost its greenery or its waterways, however, and today is still home to a wide variety of oak and pine tree species that line the bayous and scenic roadways that connect the outer rims of the city to downtown.
Houston's climate is hot and humid in the summer and temperate and humid during the winter. This makes it very amenable to growing a plethora of both exotic and indigenous plants. Because of this, it also makes it possible for the professional landscaper to provide the homeowner with an eclectic range of options when it comes to styles and types of gardens. Because of our mild winters, we seldom see much freeze damage to plants, shrubs, and trees. In fact, Houston landscapes are known throughout the South for having flowers of some sort or the other throughout the year. There are a number of species, such as pansies and cyclamen, which routinely bloom in the winter.
The downside of the Houston landscape is the heavy rainfall which we can receive at virtually any time of year. If the temperature is warm or hot, heavy rainfall will produce outbreaks of mold and fungus within a matter of 24 hours. This is not only bad for human allergies, but for garden plants as well. Steps have to be taken to minimize the impact of mold and fungus on gardens by proactively managing irrigation and at times chemically treating gardens with anti-mold and fungal agents. This type of work should never be done by anyone other than an expert botanist who knows the effects of such treatment on each species of plant within the garden, and who understands the impact that irrigation changes may have on the garden as a whole.
Throughout almost every corner of the Houston landscape, we find heavy clay soils that pose a number of challenges to gardeners and landscapers. Houston soil tends to hold a great deal of water when it rains. Drainage systems have to be built into gardens to prevent standing water from accumulating around sensitive plants that can die if exposed to excessive water. One method of doing this is to aerate the soil so that water percolates in far enough that it can be absorbed by plant roots and filter down below the harder layers of clay near to the surface. At times, it is necessary to take the clay out to some degree and replace it with bedding soil. Larger gardens or more elaborate Houston landscape projects may require concealed drains that route the water to retention ponds and curbs.
Because water cannot always easily filter through the clay soils, they can sometimes be poor in nutrients. Amending the soil may be necessary to enable it to better host a diversity of plant life, or specific exotic plants that require nutrients that do not occur naturally in Houston landscapes. The inconsistent moisture content of the earth here can also cause other problems for landscapers. The expanding and contracting of the earth can actually cause the ground to shift and move. During the summer, the soil dehydrates to the point that cracks often appear in the ground. When sudden rains roll in from the Gulf, the water fills the cracks and causes earth displacement. Structural foundations will be strained as a result, even in the largest of buildings. (This is why foundation repair is such a successful industry here on the Gulf Coast).
To compensate for the instability of the Houston landscape, professional designers have to use creative methods to ensure that the outdoor structures they build will remain in place and intact. Patios and pool decks are often built on piers and beams concealed underground. Pools are made with thicker concrete and thicker rebar. While these preventative measures cannot overcome the forces of Nature, they can provide enough of a sturdy framework to maintain the stability and cosmetics of exterior forms.
