When we walked into the museum the other day, we noticed some oil canvas paintings hanging on their wall. These were breathtakingly beautiful! We couldn't seem to get them out of our mind. You see, we are a painter and love taking oil paint and putting a picture on canvas. We believe this really is art at its finest. There are so many techniques you can use with painting. If you have chosen to paint on canvas, then you have made a great choice. Canvas is a great choice as you can paint on it comfortable.
When used in the best quality, it is durable and stiff. The pigments used in oil paintings are special, which binds well with the oil that is being used as a base. Walnut oil or Linseed oil will work the best in this type of painting. There are times where resin can be added with the base oil. This type of product is known as varnish. In order to get that finished, glossy look, one would use varnish.
How do you prepare the canvas? You prepare the canvas by slightly stretching it and mounting it on your board with clamps. You then mix your paints with oil and leave it there for some time. This will give the paint some time to perfectly blend in with the oil.
When you are doing this type of painting, it is important that you steadily make the strokes, with measured pressure. If you put extra pressure on your brush, then you are going to smudge the color.
On another note, if you do not put enough pressure on it, the right amount of oil may not be absorbed into your canvas. In turns, this is going to shorten the life of your painting when you finish it. It is important to do this properly so that you get a high quality painting that will last for a very long time.
When you have completed the painting, it will be time to let it dry. Once it is finally dry, you can coat the painting with some clear lacquer. This is called varnishing. This will make the painting waterproof and is going to extend the life of the painting.
Once this process has been completed, it will be time to let the varnish dry. The colors are going to set perfectly as time passes. When the varnish finally dries up, it is going to leave your canvas with a glossy, smooth looking painting.

The history of ethnic paintings in India can be traced back to the Bhimbatka Caves, where some of the earliest paintings of India are found. But when it comes to ethnic 'tribal' paintings of India the names which top the list are Warli paintings and Madhubani paintings.
Madhubani paintings, also known as Godhna, Maithili and Chitra figure paintings, originated out of the humble domestic rituals in Madhubani district of Bihar. Chiefly prevailing in Madhubani district, it also diffused to the adjacent districts of Jetwarpur, Ranti, Rasidpur, Bacchi, Rajangarh, etc.
As per the belief of the people of Madhubani that Gods visit each house in the morning to bless them with luck and prosperity, Madhubani paintings started as a welcome painting on the walls, doors and floors for the Gods. Till the 1960s it was a purely a decorative art. But the Bihar famine of 1964-65 took its toil on the people of Madhubani and they had to shift from agriculture to other forms livelihood. And with that started the commercialization of the Maithili paintings; it shifted from walls and floors to paper, satin, sarees, dupattas, etc, without deviating from its original themes, the themes of religion and mythology. Most of the people of Madhubani now depend on these paintings for their daily necessities.
A paste of cow dung and mud is applied on the walls and floors to give a perfect black background on which pictures are drawn with white rice paste; bright vegetable colors are then applied on the figures making them more vibrant. A great number of Madhubani painters still apply a thin layer of cow dung and mud paste on their canvases to give a more authentic look and also because it helps in proper absorption of color.
Essentially practiced by the women folk, Madhubani is an exclusively feminine school of folk painting. As a respite from their daily home-engineering they portrayed their visions, beliefs, customs and creativity with abstract figures, mostly in linear patterns. This school, however, is not confined to the feminine genre now, as the number of male painters is increasing with each passing day.
Thematically, Madhubani paintings are mostly based on religion and mythology. The religious themes are branched into two types - little tradition and great tradition. In the paintings of little tradition, Gods like Raja Salesh, Buddheshwar, Jutki Malini, Reshma, and the likes occurs in abundance. Great tradition is a tribute to the Hindu Gods like Krishna-Radha, Shiva-Parvati, Ganesha, Maa Durga, and the likes. Nevertheless, natural scenes of villages, everyday life, flora and fauna which are so much a part of life of this school of painters, also entered the domain of Godhna paintings.
The attributes characterizing almost all Madhubani paintings are :-
? Use of bold natural and artificial colors.
? A double line border with simple geometric designs or with ornate floral patterns on it.
? Symbols, lines and patterns supporting the main theme.
? Abstract-like figures, of deities or human.
? The faces of the figures has large bulging eyes and a jolting nose emerging out of the forehead.
Madhubani painting is an emblematic expression of day-to-day experiences and beliefs. As such, symbolism, simplicity and beauty hold them together in a single school of traditional art. The symbols that these Maithili painters use have their specific meanings as, for instance, fish symbolize fertility, procreation and good luck, peacocks are associated with romantic love and religion, serpents are the divine protectors.
The treatment of colour in the Indian folk art form of Madhubani painting brings it somewhat close to the Impressionistic school and the Post-Impressionistic school of painting. To some extent their theme of trivial daily activities and nature are also shared by the Godhna painters.
Characterized by vibrant use of color, underlying symbolism and traditional geometric patterns supporting the main theme, the Indian folk art form of Madhubani succeeded in creating a place for itself in the international house of fame and is now recognized world wide. The Government of India is also paying its tribute by starting training programs educating people on Madhubani paintings.

£1 shop paints and canvas for young/old starters good idea ?
I have always liked works of art and wised i could paint. I did do a very absract painting on an unusual non canvos base, with some floresent paint in the mix, i was young at the time and high on weed. I am 48 now and still have it hanging in my bedroom. I buy things from the local £ shop and noticed they sold some stuff for artist too like , tubes of paint in 12 asorted colours ( oil,acrylic and also water colours ) a pack of 12 flat head brushes and 100% pure cotton, stretched over a wooden frame size 24x30cm. Sounds like i'm selling the stuff , but no , just giving some people the heads up on some cheep painting stuff. I paid £6 for 2x canvases, 1 x oil, 1 x acrylic and 1 x water colour in packs of 12 diffrent colours, 12 brushes, not bad to try my hand at it again. you may know some one who paints , ans some of this cheep stuff mite help, i hope i have helped some one , let me know.
Good idea! The most common mistake a new artist will make is to conserve his materials because they cost so much. You must treat the materials as worthless until you do something valuable with them. So having paid so little for them in the first place is an important step towards that mindset. Later, with a better command of your expressive powers as an artist you can buy better materials and keep the same distain for them.

Chess In The Arts And Literature
Chess is a board game that has been played for many centuries. It originated in Europe and is a very popular game still today. There are national tournaments held all over the world for all age groups from young children to adults. It is also a popular game to be played in nursing homes or elderly care communities as it offers mind stimulation for the elderly.
Chess is a game that is also very popular in arts and literature. It can be seen in books, magazines, articles, newspapers, arts, ballets, or music. There have been many very well known books that are sometimes based around the game of chess or that use the game at some point in the literature. It also can be used as a metaphor for something else.
There are various chess magazines and publications that you can find in bookstores, libraries or online. Some offers subscriptions to chess enthusiasts, while others do not. Chess can also be found in many online venues.
For the chess enthusiast, there are books that are centered on chess. Sometimes this can include the actual game being some sort of central part of the book. Other times authors may be less obvious and use the chess game as metaphors, chapter titles or other various ways of intertwining the chess game into the book without the actual game being the main focus.
Chess is a game of critical thinking and strategy so many avid chess players find these types of books and articles very interesting as it is clear the author has had to use some thought to strategically position the chess analogies.
Chess can also be used in literature to dictate how the book or publications course goes. For example, a story may be based around a person and different "chess moves" they make in their life and how it affects their surroundings. It is a great way to depict struggles or battles that may be going on in a book or publication.
Chess is also found in arts, most commonly in paintings where the game of chess if being depicted being played by a group of individuals. Usually chess is played with two people. They have a board that they place the chess pieces on to. The pieces are two colors, usually black and white, and have varying shapes mostly based on medieval times. This includes kings, queens, knights, bishops and pawns.
Each player is allowed to make one move of their pieces before the other player gets to move again. The king piece is being protected by all the other chess pieces. The object of the game is to checkmate, or block the other player's king so that he has nowhere to move the king.
Also, in arts you actually see the game of chess depicted through ballet, musicals or interpretive dance moves. Again, the chess game may be more literal or the dancers may be recreating the battle or games being played as chess pieces are moved up and across a board.

Black and White Bedroom wall art?
I am looking for black and white wall art for my bedroom. I really like pictures/posters of a city skyline, and other random pictures, like I saw one of these little ballet dancers and it is like their feet and hands and I saw this black and white painting of audrey hepburn that I really like. So basically I am looking for a painting or framed poster thing of like a landscape or something pretty and girly. I also like the sequence framed paintings of just random designs that are black, white, and/or green. They have some that look a little like what I like at www.ballarddesigns.com. I know this description is very vague and hard to follow, but if anyone knows what I am talking about then can you please give me some websites or stores where I can order some wall arts like the ones I described.

HELP! I have drawers block! instead of writers block.?
I have been drawing for 6 years now and my drawings started improving and improving, I even done my first portrait of someones granddaughter in pencil and added a little charcoal and sold it! I didn't set a price because I just do it because I love it. I love drawing pictures for others and just giving it to them. would love to be an illistrater for children's books. I have even wrote a book (childrens) inspired by my sister that got killed in a wreck, dedicated to her daughter, in the book they are frogs talking to each other. But now for some reason if I sit down to draw something, it just does not turn out right , I haven't been able to draw for 6 months now. I look at my drawings and think "how did I do that?" I can't even think of anything that I have been inspired to draw. Has anyone experienced this and how did they over come it? I have drew pictures of other people but I can never draw my self, it doesn't look right. Any answers will be great!
well, i've never had drawers block, but to answer the part of your question that said you look at your drawings and wonder how you did that before, why not take a drawing class, even if you already know how to draw? maybe the professionally of it all will get you inspired again.
