Sfumato - The Concept
Sfumato was an important pillar of the Renaissance (14th-17th centuries) painting. With no color extremes, the style extends a subtle moderation to a picture. Right brush strokes, matched with balanced lighting effect, are its essentials. The famous Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) first used the term 'sfumato,' derived from the Italian word 'sfumare,' meaning to evaporate or to fade out. The Latin source is 'fumare' implying to smoke. It is a fine art style, which involves the blurring or the softening of pointed outlines by delicately and gradually blending two tones together. The thin glazes give an illusion of depth or three-dimension to the image.
The Artist and the Artworks
The most famous and the strongest example of sfumato is da Vinci's Mona Lisa (1503-06). Her mysterious smile, gaze, the dream-like rocky background, including her identity have been given an edge with the style. For the painting, the artist selected unifying mid-tones, especially the blues, greens, and earths. He avoided luminous colors, which could break the color harmony. The mid-tones created, imparted a subdued flavor to the picture. Sfumato introduces further subtlety to the paint impression and the illumination of the portrait. With the competent technicality behind, Mona Lisa smiles at the viewer with her hands folded serenely on a ledge in her front.
The Details
Moderate colors, especially the earth shades, are the foundation for the sfumato oil painting technique. With neutral grays and browns for the under painting, glazes can continue at earthy greens, blues, and browns, all staying within a similar tonal range. This gives a monochromatic touch to a painting. For uniformity with subdued, contrasting shades, complimentary colors, and intense paints such as bright reds are avoided. Black and white help adapt tones within the colors, dilute the shades, while ensuring some variation. Dark umber browns aid illustrate the objects at distance.
Applying paint in the transparent layers of glazes over a solid under painting is the best mode for a smoky and hazy illusion. Glazes are oil paints, diluted to a watery consistency with the help of a thinning agent. After the under painting is entirely dry, glaze is applied, allowing the layers to dry in between. Depending on the environmental temperature, it may take several days for each layer to dry completely.
When painting facial features, distinct outlines are avoided and very little definition between shapes is molded. The features are blended using variations in color tone. For shadows, dark browns are used, while hues are also flirted with for illusionary effects. Burnt umber & ochre are employed for lips ruling out red, while moss green and burnt umber are applied for eyes instead of blues.

Art oil painting: can't get purple mixing red and blue.?
(follow up question) I keep getting shades of brown no matter how little blue I mix.
I'm using cadium red and french ultramarine blue.

There are certain colors that are very difficult to mix. Uou can approximate purple if you mix good colors - using a less green blue to mix with the cadmium red would probably help - but to get a vibrant purple it will probably be best to just buy one. Same goes for black - you can mix a pretty good black, but never as good as you can buy.

I went to a resturant in San Antonio...anyone know the name?
It was about 6 years ago but it was a mexican resturant and it had a big bakery at the first part of the resturant and I remember a painting of Selena on the wall, and in the resturant part there was a big wall and a guy was there painting a mural of different influential hispanic people. The resturant might have been near the river walk but I kind of think it was more near the Hispanic market area. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

The famous proponent of German 'Romantic' painting, Philipp Otto Runge, best known as Philipp Runge (July 1777 - December 1810) was as good a draughtsman as he was a painter. He was a pioneer in the study of color harmony and his line of works was remarkable for its experimentation, with the varying proportions of red, yellow, and blue to create a magnificent array of unique colors. Most of Philipp's art carried the definite shades of religiousness and a sense of the universal sync of soul and divinity. Among his most popular works was a series of four paintings, called "The Times of the Day," which could only be partially completed, due to the untimely demise of Runge in 1810. "Morning" is one of the completed oil on canvas work from the series.
The detailed work "Morning" is divided horizontally into three segments - earth, mid-heavens, and heavens. The mid-heavens depict the personification of Aurora, as the central figure of the piece, positioned in the sky. The ground below is marked with plants and landscape characteristically from Northern Germany, where a newly born baby is shown lying on its back. The vertical portions are symmetrical on either side, full of this middle portion. Two young children sitting on the ground are bending forward to pluck irises from the shrubs. Right above their heads, two other figures of children are portrayed hovering in the sky with a bunch of flowers in one hand and a single strand in other. They have their gaze fixed on the figure of Aurora and are offering her a flower from their bunch.
Up above in the sky, angles are floating in different postures and acts. The mythological figures of winged Cherubim have been reincarnated into 'Symbolic' Geister, aiming ahead and reaching out for the Morning Star (planet Venus in the eastern sky that appears right before the sunrise). Like in all of his other works, Philipp has embodied the spirit of Christian trinity in the "Morning." He has made use of his traditional set of colors - blue to represent divinity & the night sky before morning, white to indicate the Holy Spirit, and yellow to exemplify the transcendental morning & evening hours. The entire frame is lit by the glow of Aurora, the epitome of knowledge and light, as an illustration of spiritual enlightenment of mortal souls.
Although, Philipp Runge could not contribute a much to art, in the terms of the number of years, yet he left his indelible mark on the history of art. Runge's philosophical understanding of the interplay of color tones was exceptional, "Morning" being the classic example of the case.

When i was 13 i used to find others artwork and sketch it. (i now do my own work) i told people it wasn't mine and that i had gotten it from others art though. anyways, i now cannot find the original painting i got this from. I believe i had found this on Deviant art... any help?

How To Determine The Value Of Antique Oil Paintings?
Antique Oil Paintings describe the story of a time gone by! They attract us because of its beauty and its value. Old things always cost more. Therefore, Antique Oil Paintings by renowned artists are indeed very expensive. Copies of famous and popular works by these artists are available in shops and museums and are easily recognized by most of the people around the world. Let's look more at antique oil paintings.
It is considered that oil painting was first used in Afghanistan in between the fifth and the ninth centuries. However, it did not get popular until sometime during the fifteenth century. Traditional artists use canvas made from Linen which was expensive. Other popular but less expensive canvases used by them were produced from cotton fabric.
Paintings by legendary artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Boticelli, Picasso, Michelangelo, etc. Are known for their style and beauty. These arts are not affordable by normal public. However, replicas of the famous paintings are being reproduced and are available at a less price. These can be found in antique shops and vintage stores. They are available for purchase at online stores too.
People who are not concerned about the authenticity, usually prefer forgeries or reproduced world classic paintings. Fake paintings are the curse of the masterpieces of the well-known artists. Chemical analysis and tests for determining the age and origin is the only way to prevent the forgeries.
The value of the painting is determined by its age. The age and origin of an oil painting can be calculated by chemical analysis of the paint used in the art. These tests can determine whether the painting is genuine or a forgery. To find out the age of the painting, there are many tests available; some of which can be done at home as well. Examples of these tests are evaluating the "craquelure" (checking the cracks on the paint layer), looking for the pigments and hue of the colors, checking the protective varnishes etc.
Understanding of the internal chemistry of oil paint systems at the different stages in their lifetime lets you test the authenticity of the oil paintings from your home. In older days, artists used to give a layer of varnishes to protect the painting. Analysing the material the painting was done on will give a picture about its age. Understanding the colors used, their combinations, theme of painting, any signature on the paint etc help us find out the period the work was done.
An alternative way to test an oil painting is to take it to an art specialist, or art gallery or art museum in your town. They will have professional ways of testing it and finding out the authenticity of the arts. They use technologies such as Infra Red Reflectography, Wood's light, Stereoscopic Microscope, etc to calculate the age of an art.
Traditional ways of sketching a work of art differentiates it from modern paintings and therefore antique oil paintings have their own place in the world of art.

How to fix a stiff vintage leather bag?
