Is Bipolar The Root of Genius?
Almost since the beginning of time, human beings have recognized the connection between intelligence or creativity and mental illness. Consider the way these individuals are portrayed in movies and books, for instance - the mad scientist working day and night in his laboratory, the hallucinating artist who doesn't even take time out from his creative work to eat. Those with Bipolar disorder are not immune to this stereotype. In fact, scientists and researchers have noted that an unusually high number of creative geniuses also suffered from Bipolar disorder.
Although many of the following individuals did not live in a time period when Bipolar disorder was a recognized disease, specialists who have studied their journals and experiences cited by others have proposed these geniuses probably suffered from the disorder. The reason Bipolar may bring about this increase in creative abilities is linked to the nature of the disease. One symptom of mania is an increase in creative, mental and physical energy. This might explain why these people were able create such works of genius, and why they were able to devote such concentrated periods of time to their work.
These creative geniuses included novelist Virginia Woolf, who brought us numerous first rate novels including Mrs.Dalloway, Orlando and A Room of One's Own. Poet Sylvia Plath also suffered from the mood swings associated with Bipolar disorder. Musician and composer Ludwig van Beethoven is also believed to have suffered from Bipolar Disorder. He is known as perhaps the most influential composer of all times bringing us masterpieces such as Choral Symphony and the Waldstein Sonata.
Perhaps best known for her role as the Southern belle Scarlet O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, actress Vivien Leigh was also plagued with Bipolar Disorder. Despite the disease and the shock therapy she was given as the treatment for Bipolar in those days, Mrs. Leigh won two Oscars for her performances.
Painter Vincent Van Gogh is also said to have suffered from Bipolar disorder. His most loved painting Starry Night was painted while Van Gogh was in a mental asylum for treatment of his erratic moods. In his own words Van Gogh said of himself, "It is only too true that a lot of artists are mentally ill - it's a life which, to put it mildly, makes one an outsider, I'm all right when I completely immerse myself in my work, but I'll always remain half crazy."
More recently, Axl Rose, lead singer of the heavy metal band Guns N' Roses has also been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Grammy nominated country and western singer Charley Pride also suffered with Bipolar Disorder. Musician and actor Sting has also made references to being Bipolar. A final famous actor diagnosed with Bipolar disorder is Jean-Claude Van Damme, known for his roles in movies such as Universal Solider and Timecop.
Although it may not always be the case, it seems that as we look through history, some of the most creative people who have shared our planet have suffered from Bipolar Disorder. So does the emotional instability of Bipolar disorder bring about genius? You be the judge.

Has anyone ever seen a 3d picture version of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'?
Once I was in walmart and I saw a framed 3d picture of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' and then if you looked at it from another angle a different Van Gogh picture (forget which one) can be seen. I went to buy it a few weeks later and they were all gone. Since then I've looked EVERYWHERE to find another one. Has anyone else ever seen this? If so do you know where online I can buy one?
This has driven me crazy for months!

i have a rockwell painting that i hope is real but how do i know for sure was he heavily copied?

First, learn the difference between a painting, a print and a reproduction and something about the life and art history of Norman Rockwell.
If what you have is framed and behind glass it will not be a painting but a print. Paintings are never encased in glass.
Much of Norman Rockwell's best known images were never paintings to begin with, like the one you mention, but were illustrations done for magazines. Illustrations are not paintings and if you have a framed illustration it's more than likely you have a reproduction of the original. Almost always, the original copies of the illustrations are retained by either the owners or the magazines, the publishers or the artist.
But Rockwell did paint original paintings. (Less than a hundred, but still they were paintings) Virtually all or these have been recorded and accounted for. If you still feel you have an original Norman Rockwell painting you can go to the Rockwell web site (operated by the Rockwell family trust) and they can validate it.
It's easy enough to tell if you have a painting. Look at the back of the art work. Is it framed on stretcher bars? Do you actually see canvas? Is the canvas slightly yellowed or faded or tarnished?
By the way: A print that is printed on a canvas instead of normal paper is still a printed copy of the original painting. A print printed on canvas is done so to make the copy have the look and grainy feel of the original painting. The edges of these 'fake' paintings where the color ends will be perfectly straight and perfectly flush to the corner because they were never painted on the canvas to begin with but were ran through a press that printed the image on the canvas.

How to Get the Most Out of your Oil Painting
Learning how to become a good oil painter is a difficult undertaking. In fact, it is more than likely one of the most difficult painting mediums to master. Things like color mixing & theory, perspective, techniques and materials can really intimidate a beginner artist.
So how do you get the most out of your oil painting and become a more accomplished artist?
You must make it a point to learn the fundamentals of oil painting, practice often and have an enormous amount of patience.
You must start with the fundamentals of oil painting first. You cannot expect to produce Rembrandt quality paintings in the beginning. In fact, the first paintings you produce will probably be a lot worse than you may have anticipated. Frustration will more than likely come into the picture (pun intended). They key is to learn from your mistakes and do not let them defeat you.
So what are some of the fundamentals of oil painting? What information should you study and learn first?
Below are some topics of interest that you should definitely study further when you have time:
LEARN HOW TO DRAW
You will be amazed at how much learning how to draw will help improve your oil paintings. In fact, years ago art students were not even permitted to pick up an oil painting brush until they learned the fundamentals of drawing. My advice would be to find a few good books on drawing fundamentals and start there. Drawing is an art form all by itself and you should not be expected to master drawing as an art form, unless you want to of course.

COLOR THEORY
You MUST learn about color theory if you plan on producing quality works of art. If you don't understand how colors work, then you might as well hang up your brushes now. There is much to learn about colors like temperature, hue and intensity and how colors interact with one another. This is a very important aspect of oil painting and must not be overlooked.

PERSPECTIVE
Learning about perspective will teach you how to translate a 3-dimensional world onto a 2-dimensional canvas or other support. Learning perspective is a necessary ingredient toward producing convincing oil paintings.

MATERIALS
Materials to an oil painter are like what a guitar is to a guitarist. A guitarist cannot play without his instrument nor can he play without understanding how his instrument works. Your painting materials are your instruments. They are what enable you to express yourself, so learning more about them is pretty good idea. Get to know the different kinds of brushes and what they do. Know your paints. Not all colors behave the same. Some are more transparent or opaque than others. Know your supports and the difference between them. The list goes on.

TECHNIQUES
There are a myriad of oil painting techniques that you can utilize to create your paintings. So much so, that it is beyond the scope of this article. Techniques like wet on wet, glazing, alla prima, knife painting, etc. should all be explored. Working with various techniques will help you develop your own unique style.

LEARN FROM THE MASTERS
Masters like Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt van Rijn , Johannes Vermeer and many more, were all able to successfully translate our 3-dimensional world onto a 2-dimensional surface in such a way that it grabs the viewers attention and keeps it there. Their paintings engage the viewer and bring them back time and time again to look some more. Why? What is it that these paintings have that make them so popular? Well, one way to find out is to study them. If at all possible, make it a point to visit a museum as often as possible and study the works of the masters. Find paintings that grab your attention and draw you in. Then, when you have time, try to find books and other resources on those artists so that you can learn more about them and their techniques. When you are ready, pick a painting that you are quite fond of and try to reproduce it.

UNKNOWN/HIDDEN Vincent Van GOGH oil painting Discovered by the VGM in Amsterdam, What does this mean for art?
The VGM has discovered a new Van Gogh oil painitng. Rumours are on the net.
Would it make for a good movie or book if true?

Do you know, I answered a question on here only a few days ago from someone who said they wanted to know where to get an expert opinion on what they thought may be a van Gogh painting.
I suggested contacting the VGM....................
Now, before anyone says so, I know it would take rather longer than a few days for the VGM to make an analysis and declare a new find..............but its a nice thought, eh?

does anyone know anything about rogier van der weyden last judgement paintings?
I have a few questions about it...first there are 2 versions of the painting one with the archangel michael in a white rob with red wings and the other he is in a gold armored suit and there are demons in that painting but not in the other. also near jesus's head there are words written i think in latin maybe something else and i have not been able to find out what they say if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated thank you.
In the famous Beaune Altarpiece, Christ is pronouncing the words from Matthew 25: "Come, you who my father has blessed, take for your heritage the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." And "Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."

Vincent Van Gogh`s Letters. Press Release
At the end of 2009 in Amsterdam famous correspondence between the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo was published for the first time. These six books contain hundreds of letters along with illustrations to them. The brothers' correspondence translated into English is available on the www.vangoghpaints.net site. Authors of this resource have created a specialized dictionary of the “van Gogh time” explaining names of geographical places and famous people of the time mentioned in the letters, art terms and Dutch words used in the correspondence.
The van Gogh brothers started their correspondence after the younger Theo had visited Vincent in the Hague. At the time Vincent was 19 and Theodorus was 15. The brothers kept writing letters to each other for 18 years (1872 – 1890), 697 of which have survived to our days. Of these, only 36 letters were written by Theo, who treated his brother's letters with more respect: thanks to that now we can read 661 letter of the genius artist.
First letters were short and plain. For instance, in one of them Vincent asked his brother to give up smoking pipe and to study works of great artists and writers. But by and by the elder brother started sending Theo his pencil sketches from the peasants' life and in general letters gradually became more thorough. Vincent having found a grateful listener in his brother related to him his views on life and art. In these letters – written both in Dutch and French - the artist mentioned more than 300 paintings he was working on at the moment. Moreover, many specialists believe that this correspondence is not merely of a literary interest – a large number of his letters the painter accompanied with sketches to the paintings he was working at the moment.
Throughout his whole life Theodorus was financially helping his elder brother allowing him to concentrate solely on his art. Theo being aware of Vincent's sensitivity towards this tried different tricks. At first Theo had been assuring his brother that it was their father who had been sending him money. But eventually the artist found out who was in fact helping him. All his life he was uneasy because of the fact that he depended on his younger brother. He wasn't either much consoled by the excuse that that was Theo's way of contributing to the creation of his paintings and that they would divide money from paintings' sale in future. Notwithstanding the fact that Theo was an art dealer he didn't manage to sell any of his brother's works.
In 1884 the brothers made a deal. In exchange for Vincent's paintings Theo committed to provide his brother with 200 francs a month along with brushes and canvases of the highest quality. The younger brother was providing the artist with clothes and was paying for his medical treatment. According to one version Vincent committed suicide because of guilt that he was feeling before Theo who had to support not only Vincent, but also his wife and child and an old mother. On June 27, 1890 Vincent van Gogh shot himself. He had positively refused medical treatment and died two days later in the hands of his beloved brother. Vincent's last – unfinished – letter to Theo was found in his pocket after his suicide.
Church in Auvers-sur-Oise where Vincent had shot himself didn't let bury him in its cemetery. But the burial was allowed in the village of Mery not far from town and on July 30, 1890 Vincent van Gogh was buried. Theo was desperate after his brother's death and outlived him only by 6 months. He was originally buried in Utrecht, but in 1914 Theo's widow – Jonanna Bonger-van Gogh, ardent admirer of van Gogh's work – re-buried him in the cemetery of Auvers, near Vincent. Their graves are still there.

His exaggerated, intense color, aggressive brushwork, bold impasto paint application (thickly applied paint) are Van Gogh's style of painting.
He exploited nature to reflect his inner vision and emotional state: line, color, spatial composition, distortion and exaggeration were all manipulated to express his personal interior world.
As he did in many of his paintings, Van Gogh's saw himself as working to create to the next level beyond impresionism. He was a foreunner of Expressionism, a post- impressionist.
Van Gogh was driven came to art for spiritual goals and a passion and desire to make a difference in the world.
Impressionists tried to reflect the world as it was, Van Gogh's art was a communication, or expression of itellect, mystery, emotion and imagination.
His uses shape, form, color, texture, line, space and value. Brushstrokes are used for texture, variety of color value and shape and form and use of space and line to show depth and realism.
He painted at least 800 paintings, so Starry Night is one of his many paintings where all these elements of design have been used, line, direction, shape, size, tone, texture and color.
