Forest valley in Australia?
I watched an old BBC documentry on Australia and it's landscape once, and I saw something about how the interior used to be covered in a massive forest back in the day.
Anyway, part of it was in a big valley, and it was cut off by the massive desert that came about, and developed separately to the rest of the continent.
I was wondering if anyone knew what the hell I am talking about, and if they could point me in the direction of further information.
Many thanks in advance.
If back in the day was when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, then maybe (they have been finding fossils.) There have been no interior forests since man has inhabited the planet.

First of all, a regular forest usually consists of one dominant species of tree - the evergreen forests of colder climates, or the redwood forest of California, for example. A tropical rainforest has many species of trees and plants, and trees of the same species very seldom grow close together. Scientists have counted as many as 300 different species growing in one 2 1/2 acre (one hectare) in a South American rainforest.
While forests are found in all climates and all parts of the world, tropical rainforests are found only in hot, humid climates. They cover less than six percent of the Earth's land surface. Most are found in areas near the equator such as Central America, South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. A rainforest often gets more than 100 inches of rain a year, the average humidity is between 77 and 88 percent, and the temperature is usually between 93º F (34º C) and 68º F (20º C).
Probably the most significant difference between a regular forest and a tropical rainforest, and the one that has scientists worried that rainforests might someday totally disappear, is the fact that whereas most of the nutrients of a regular forest are stored in its vegetation, most of a rainforest's nutrients are stored in the soil. This means that when a regular forest is burned or flooded or cut down, the trees and plants can eventually grow back because of the nutrients in their roots. But in the rainforests, where thousands of years of heavy rain have washed away many of the nutrients in the soil, it is very difficult for vegetation to grow back after it is burned or cut down.
Unlike a regular forest, a tropical rainforest has four very distinct layers based on the types of trees and animals that live there. From the top down, these layers are the emergent, upper canopy, understory, and forest floor.
Emergent trees are 100 to 240 feet tall and are spaced wide apart with straight, smooth trunks and leaves that form umbrella-shaped canopies. The upper canopy consists of trees that are 60 to 130 feet tall. Most of the animals live here.
Most of the trees in the understory, or lower canopy, are about 60 feet tall. Very little light reaches this level, the humidity is always high, and there's little air movement.
The forest floor is almost totally shaded. As a result, there are very few bushes or herbs, and a person can easily walk through most parts. But you have to be careful where you walk, because the ground is teeming with termites and other insects, earthworms and fungi that feed on the litter that falls to the ground. Approximately 80 percent of all insect species live in tropical rainforests.

If a tree falls in the forest but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
I think I may know the answer to this question. I just wanted to get other people's answers.
My answer is that yes it does make a sound. I know that the same way I know that if there if that tree is in the forest but no one is around to see it, is it still there? The answer to that one would be yes, so it should also be the same for the sound.
Well anyways I just want to know what everyone else thinks!

Oil Spills Cleanup: Then and Now
Meet the Planet is an environmental multimedia platform, which aims at increasing the level of awareness among people about some of the pressing issues that our environment is facing today. Jim Lynn, the inventor of Oil Gone Easy S-200 products, one of the most environmentally-safe oil spill cleaners appeared as a guest on.
On this show, Jim Lynn reveals some alarming facts regarding oil spills. He states that, every year 20 million gallons of oil escapes into North American waters of which only 15% oil spills are from pipeline tanker and the remaining are caused by oil runoff from vehicles on land, fuel dumping by commercial pilots, and contamination by recreational boaters. Pollution of drinking water and waterways, death of marine wildlife, and tar balls coming up on the shore are some of the detrimental effects.
Jim Lynn also gives an insight on different oil spill cleanup methods used and explain how they’re more harmful to the environment than the oil spill itself. He lists out the disadvantages of using toxic oil spill cleaners and dispersants. He explains that the toxic oil spill cleaners and other dispersants don’t get rid of oil completely, they just hide the oil. For instance, dispersants; they give the appearance of having cleaned the oil spill outwardly, but the fact is that oil is dispersed deep into the water column. Fish and marine wildlife feed on them and get infected.
He explains that other standard oil spill cleanup methods like high-pressure washing and hot water are also equally harmful. These oil spill cleanup techniques drive oil into the ground, which later surfaces. According to him, the only method that eliminates oil pollution and brings the contaminated site back to the original state is bioremediation. Oil Gone Easy S-200 makes use of this technology, which not only cleans off oil stains in an eco-friendly way, but also cleans them effectively.

Wouldn't changing the way people can invest in oil stop the never ending rise in gas prices?
I'm not stock market savy, however, it seems to me the way to take the speculation out of the oil market is to stop the speculators. Change the way people can invest in things like oil, rice , and corn. Allow them to buy stock, but not things like futures.
Am I completely off base, or is this a solution to stop the handful of investors ripping the rest of the world off? When people can't afford to buy food for their families or pay rent, something needs to be done. Any other suggestions?
You are right on with what you are saying.
Prices are being driven up right now by trades who are buying oil, but never plan to take delivery of it. They do not have any means to hold the oil if it was ever brought to them, so they sell it and make a major profit before the delivery date. Most of the speculators who are trading in oil right now are investment companies, not oil company's.
So what is the solution to the problem? Only allow people who have the means to take delivery of oil trade in oil. This means that only oil company's can by and sell oil futures because they are the only ones with the ability to use the oil that they are buying.

Houston Landscape
The Houston landscape today is very different from the landscape that European settlers found when they first arrived in Texas. At that time, the areas around Buffalo Bayou and its many tributaries was a dark swamp populated by cypress and magnolia trees. In many places, the forest was so impenetrable (and filled with mosquitoes) that even the Karankaway Indians would not venture too far in. Over the years, the Houston landscape gave way to industrialization and residential development. It has never lost its greenery or its waterways, however, and today is still home to a wide variety of oak and pine tree species that line the bayous and scenic roadways that connect the outer rims of the city to downtown.
Houston's climate is hot and humid in the summer and temperate and humid during the winter. This makes it very amenable to growing a plethora of both exotic and indigenous plants. Because of this, it also makes it possible for the professional landscaper to provide the homeowner with an eclectic range of options when it comes to styles and types of gardens. Because of our mild winters, we seldom see much freeze damage to plants, shrubs, and trees. In fact, Houston landscapes are known throughout the South for having flowers of some sort or the other throughout the year. There are a number of species, such as pansies and cyclamen, which routinely bloom in the winter.
The downside of the Houston landscape is the heavy rainfall which we can receive at virtually any time of year. If the temperature is warm or hot, heavy rainfall will produce outbreaks of mold and fungus within a matter of 24 hours. This is not only bad for human allergies, but for garden plants as well. Steps have to be taken to minimize the impact of mold and fungus on gardens by proactively managing irrigation and at times chemically treating gardens with anti-mold and fungal agents. This type of work should never be done by anyone other than an expert botanist who knows the effects of such treatment on each species of plant within the garden, and who understands the impact that irrigation changes may have on the garden as a whole.
Throughout almost every corner of the Houston landscape, we find heavy clay soils that pose a number of challenges to gardeners and landscapers. Houston soil tends to hold a great deal of water when it rains. Drainage systems have to be built into gardens to prevent standing water from accumulating around sensitive plants that can die if exposed to excessive water. One method of doing this is to aerate the soil so that water percolates in far enough that it can be absorbed by plant roots and filter down below the harder layers of clay near to the surface. At times, it is necessary to take the clay out to some degree and replace it with bedding soil. Larger gardens or more elaborate Houston landscape projects may require concealed drains that route the water to retention ponds and curbs.
Because water cannot always easily filter through the clay soils, they can sometimes be poor in nutrients. Amending the soil may be necessary to enable it to better host a diversity of plant life, or specific exotic plants that require nutrients that do not occur naturally in Houston landscapes. The inconsistent moisture content of the earth here can also cause other problems for landscapers. The expanding and contracting of the earth can actually cause the ground to shift and move. During the summer, the soil dehydrates to the point that cracks often appear in the ground. When sudden rains roll in from the Gulf, the water fills the cracks and causes earth displacement. Structural foundations will be strained as a result, even in the largest of buildings. (This is why foundation repair is such a successful industry here on the Gulf Coast).
To compensate for the instability of the Houston landscape, professional designers have to use creative methods to ensure that the outdoor structures they build will remain in place and intact. Patios and pool decks are often built on piers and beams concealed underground. Pools are made with thicker concrete and thicker rebar. While these preventative measures cannot overcome the forces of Nature, they can provide enough of a sturdy framework to maintain the stability and cosmetics of exterior forms.

Pretty darn good, but the last 4 lines lose the flow. But it paints a vivid mind picture all in all. Good Job!

Are you Yellow Based or Blue Based? Five Simple Questions
Never purchase the wrong cosmetics again by answering just a few simple questions to determine whether you are yellow or blue based skintone.
This knowledge will insure that your cosmetic and clothing selections are enhancing your overall look as well as complimenting your skin tone.
1. Can you visibly see a blue or yellow undertone in your skin?
If your answer is Yellow! You are Yellow based. Do you have a rosey or pink look or an obvious blue? Then you are most likely Blue based . It is important that you know that most people are cool toned.
2. What is your hair color? Is it your natural color? Do you have highlights? If so, are they golden or platinum?
The very obvious warm tones such as golden red hair or golden blond or any brown hair with golden highlights will be yellow toned. Most obvious blue tones would be Platinum blond hair or highlights, gray and brunettes with clarity in color.
3. What is your eye color? Blue? Green? Brown? Hazel? Gray? Black?
This is slightly more difficult to arrive at a definitive answer on color alone although certainly assists in arriving at the end result provided the previous questions are answered. Most pure Olive skin Asians and Latinos are cool toned .
4. Do you feel you look best in Gold or Silver jewelry?
Gold equals yellow and of course, Silver equals Blue.
5. Do you look best in Jewel toned clothing such as purple, royal blue, intense pinks, bluer toned reds? Pure white? Or do you look best in Oranges, browns, earth tones, yellow greens, orange red and Ivory?
If you chose the jewel tones and pure white then you are most likely blue based. Do you feel your best when you are wearing earth tones, olive green with touch of orange? It is a safe bet that you are warm toned.
There is an exception to most rules and this is in no way an exact science. The interesting aspect is that some women are quite fortunate to be neutral toned. These lucky women have the ability to mix it up with both warm and cools tones and in the end being equally complimented by both.
Hopefully, this has removed the mystery from determining whether you are blue or yellow based. If not, the good new is that many companies including SeneGence International are adding neutral products that will suffice for either side.

Ok... Growing up my sister and I learned listening/ reading comprehension with this box set. (Like hooked on phonics but not) It had blue and green folded cards with passages on them and tapes that went along with the cards. The people on the tape would read the stories as you followed and then there were questions to answer at the end. I want to buy it for my kids. Please help.
