how to make a canvas for oil painting?
i need untempered masonite; i found hardboards at home depot but none of them are untempered. i am using it for the corner bases of a canvas and i am using oil paint. does anyone know where to buy"untempered" kind?
and also, i was told to make support bars and the bars are suppose to be 1x2 pine(the same material i used for the the frame of the canvas) . the canvas is not suppose to come in contact with the support bars, so how would i make this possible if 1x2 pine is the same size?
Are you going to use the Masonite for a support and stretch canvas over it? If you are you can raise the surface by nailing or gluing mitered 1/2" or 3/4" quarter round at the edges and stretching the canvas over that. The thin edge will keep the canvas away from the Masonite surface. But why not use, or simply build conventional stretcher bars, or just paint directly on the surface of the gessoed Masonite?
And who told you to go with Untempered?
Nowadays you can use the TEMPERED product, which is the one with a smooth surface on one or both sides. It is darker in color than the untempered. Years ago it was tempered with an oil of some sort that potentially could leach into the painting. Now it is tempered with heat and pressure.The gesso or primer creates a barrier for oils and acids moving in either direction. Recent research seems to indicate it's not a 100% iimpermeable barrier, but good enough unless the painter is doing something really extreme.
Either way, just to be safe, you can wash the board down with alcohol to get rid of any surface oils or impurities before you start and feel better.

£1 shop paints and canvas for young/old starters good idea ?
I have always liked works of art and wised i could paint. I did do a very absract painting on an unusual non canvos base, with some floresent paint in the mix, i was young at the time and high on weed. I am 48 now and still have it hanging in my bedroom. I buy things from the local £ shop and noticed they sold some stuff for artist too like , tubes of paint in 12 asorted colours ( oil,acrylic and also water colours ) a pack of 12 flat head brushes and 100% pure cotton, stretched over a wooden frame size 24x30cm. Sounds like i'm selling the stuff , but no , just giving some people the heads up on some cheep painting stuff. I paid £6 for 2x canvases, 1 x oil, 1 x acrylic and 1 x water colour in packs of 12 diffrent colours, 12 brushes, not bad to try my hand at it again. you may know some one who paints , ans some of this cheep stuff mite help, i hope i have helped some one , let me know.

Need ideas for decorating my daughter's bedroom ...?
The main problem is that I am not permitted to change the wall colour as we live in my mother's house. They are currently a sort of dark cream colour ... not quite yellow, but definitely more yellow than regular cream. (The window frames and doors are a darker shade of this same colour.) I cannot imagine what colours to put with this - the other rooms in the house are decorated solely in this colour or else have some navy blue, but this isn't very exciting for a little girl's room!
There is a Venetian blind in the room already which is the same colour as the walls, so really I am needing ideas for fabric/colours for a Roman blind and for bedding. The carpet will also be remaining, but that is neutral.
Also, it is a relatively modern house so things like cottagey, floral patterns are not really appropriate.
My daughter is a baby now, but I am looking for ideas that will suit a child up to about age ten or so.

What about greens, that's also a calming color. You could get sheers and put them on a rod behind her headboard (baby bed) and match them on the windows, also paint the knobs on the dresser, blankets and tie in some fake plants.
I can't quite imagine the color, but possibly a bright pink paired with a bright lime green (you can tone that color down too) I'd go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a paint chip the color of the wall, and try different colors against it. Does you daughter respond to a special color now? Maybe you could go with a variation of that color.

It's an oil panting on canvas. It looks like a perspective in the woods along a river with a mountain veiwing in the background (possibly el capitan). Any good advise on how to obtain the info from the painting? Is there a way to post the painting so it's easier to identify?

How do I properly showcase canvas and print work in a portfolio?
I use sharpies and canvas medium to create art. I would like to showcase my work by taking photos of it and creating a portfolio to take and show friends and eventually potential buyers my work. I would like this to be as professional as possible.
How do I format the portfolio to look up to standards? Also, should I include little descriptions of the pieces such as dimensions and medium since the portfolio will only showcase photos of the work -not the actual work.

first you need a portfolio, those scrap booking books work well, I bought one in black, then they have the plastic inserts that you can slide your pages into
i created my portfolio on power point, others have used photo shop
you can upload your photos and yes, have a short description (materials etc) and the dimensions and year
its also nice to have a table of contents and a statement about your artistic process, resume at the end
print it on nice heavy paper, you also may need to cut the white edges off because black is the best background and remount on a black sheet of paper, or you can talk to people at office max who do professional printing
