Selling a Painting?
I have been offered a more than generous some for a painting I aquired from an unknown painter. I will say that the painting is oil on canvas repro, 24X36 inches of Venus. Is it legal to sell this painting in the USA, although the original painter is dead. With all these copy rights, I am not sure if it is legal. I purchased this painting directly from the painter in Italy, Cash. I never obtained a receipt. The possible buyer is offering me cash.
The painting, or reproduction as you mentioned, is your property, and you can sell it for whatever price you can get. It's perfectly legal, and you do not need to get permission from the dead artist's estate, or pay anything more. The artist was already compensated for the work when he sold it to you. If you decide to sell it, that's not an infringement of the copyright. It's just an exercise of your rights.
What would be an infringement of the copyright would be to make further reproductions from your piece and sell those. You only own the one canvas, not the image itself. That is owned by the artist's estate for a period of years after his death.
Go ahead and take the cash.

Free Oil Painting Tips - How to Keep your Oil Colors Pure
One of the biggest hurdles for beginner oil painters is learning how to keep colors pure. How many times have you started an oil painting only to quit from frustration because things just didn't look right. Your colors were muddy or they just lacked brilliance. This is a very common problem for artists just starting out with oil paints. Hopefully after reading this article, you will no longer have to put up with this frustration any longer and will finally be able to enjoy oil painting.
BE CLEAN AND ORGANIZED
I know for some of us, it can be very difficult to maintain a clean and organized painting environment. Sometimes we can get very caught up in our work and things can get sloppy. The last thing you want is to become a sloppy painter as your work will suffer. Break the habit early and try your hardest to develop clean and organized painting habits.
Your Palette
First, you should get into the habit of laying out your colors the same way every time you paint. This is just good practice and keeps the painting process flowing nicely. Arrange your colors along the edges of your palette leaving a lot of room in the center for mixing.
Don't be afraid to squeeze out a good amount of paint, especially your whites. You will be more productive if you aren't continuously stopping to squeeze out more paint.
Make certain to include all of the colors you think you will need to complete that session of painting. Again, this will make you more productive.
When adding paint to the palette, I have found that squeezing the paint out in long lines, as opposed to puddles, keeps my colors cleaner. When you have puddles of paint, they tend to get soiled by other colors when mixing. With a long line of paint, you can just take paint from the end as needed and not dirty the rest. Keep some rags or paper towels handy for wiping your palette knife clean.
It's a good idea to continuously wipe your palette clean during the painting process. There is nothing more frustrating then trying to remove dried up oil paint. Keep some alcohol handy so that you can keep the mixing area of your palette clean.
If you don't want to fuss around with a regular palette, why not try a disposable one? They are basically paper with a plastic coating that prevents the paper from absorbing the oil. The beauty of the disposable palette, is that you can simply throw it in the trash when you are done. Using a disposable palette will definitely help keep your colors clean as you will be starting with a clean surface every time you start a new painting session.
When mixing your colors, use your palette knife and not your brush. A palette knife can be wiped completely clean so there is no chance of your colors becoming contaminated. Your brush is made for painting and not mixing and you can shorten the life span of your brush if you are continually mixing with it.
Brushes
I like to have a handful of clean brushes near by when I am painting. This way, I do not need to stop and clean my brushes when I am working with a different color and there is less risk of the wrong colors getting into the mix.
SATURATION OR BRILLIANCE OF COLOR
When a color is squeezed straight from the tube, it is said to be high in saturation or brilliance. This is because it hasn't been mixed with any other colors. The more colors you mix together, the duller they will become. It has been said that one should not mix more than three colors together and this a very good rule to follow. If you mix more than three colors together you are kind of defeating the purpose.
Why is this so? Let's say that you are going to mix a brown. You decide to use red, yellow and blue to create your brown. You then decide to mix in a bit of orange. As you know, red mixed with yellow will create orange. So there is no need to add the additional color.
No one ever said it is a sin to use color straight from the tube. If you are painting something that calls for brighter color, why not use paint straight from the tube without mixing. Sometimes we get so accustomed to mixing color, that we neglect the pure color that is right in front of us. When using pure color though, try not to over do it. Too many bright colors can create havoc in a painting. Try and add bright colors against a duller surrounding so that your bright colors really stand out.
LIGHTEN OR DARKEN WITH COLOR
What is it that most of us do when we want to change the value of a color? To lighten a color, we usually add white and to darken a color we use black. You should always look for the opportunity to use color to change the value instead of black and white. Adding white or black to color will diminish its brilliance, unless that is the effect you are shooting for. A great example of this is using Yellow Ochre. If you want to brighten and lighten this color, instead of adding white, try adding a little Cadmium Yellow Light.

how do i know if my oil painting dry enough to varnish ?
1. painting number 1: how do I know if it is dry enough to varnish...it is not sitcky but has a sheen ( does that mean it is not dry yet? )... this painting has been done in 3-4 thin layers of paint and has been drying for the last 3 months.
2. painting (no:2) has been drying for a month. I used a single layer of paint with very little medium but have applied some orange paint with a knife to add some texture to it....how long will that take to dry completely??
3. when should use varnish. I was planning to use a spray varnish. how long will that take to dry?
i am new to oil paints....very eager to display my paintings...but it is taking too long to dry...help !
Wait a minimum of 6 months after you are done! The oil paint is oxidizing, not drying so the process takes longer than you would think. If you must display it you can put a light, (spray) coat on for safety.

I tried looking for it on Google but these fake ones kept coming out. I can't really differentiate the real from the fake so can somebody give me the link? Also, the picture needs to have a high resolution cause I need to analyse it later.(but if its not I guess its okay...) Thanks!

Milan being an ancient city, it will not be surprising to find umpteen number of museums, churches and other religious buildings. Cenacolo Vinciano- The Last Supper, a very renowned masterpiece in history, was painted by Leonardo da Vinci on the wall of the refectory in Santa Maria delle Grazie, a Dominican convent. This exceptional work of genius resulted in it being declared a part of UNESCO’s Worldwide Heritage since the year 1980. It is to be noted that this underwent a long restoration process and is now saved from deterioration.
La Scala Theater Museum- This museum is an exhibition of artistically valuable and historically important costumes and theatre sets. Founded in the year 1913,it was restored and re-opened in the year 2004 with a new display by Pier Luigi Pizzi. It exhibits the life of a very famous Giuseppe Verdi and La Scala Theatre’s architecture. A part of this museum exhibits displays that belonged to Maria Callas and Rudolf Nureyev. It also holds exhibitions related to the current operas being staged at La Scala on a temporary basis. The museum is easily accesible by bus, tram and train. Taxi services are also available.
Pinacoteca di Brera- Set up by Napoleone Bonaparte, this art gallery that dates back to 1809, this contains art collected from churches and convents throughout Europe. It exhibits masterpieces by Perro della Francesca, Raffaello, Mantenga, il Bramante, Caravaggio and an excellent statue of Napoleon by Canova.
Pinacoteca Ambrosiana- Dating back to 1609, this is Milan’s most ancient museum and is proudly exhibits works by Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello and Botticelli. It also has a library that has books on ancient codes,books and manuscripts.
The Museum of Ancient Art- Housed in Castello Sforzesco, it has displays sculptures and works of the period between fourth to sixteenth century. It also conains the funeral monument for Gaston di Foix and the “Pietà Rondinini” by Michelangelo.
The Museum of Science and Technology- Recently renovated and housed in an old monastery, with 40,000 squayre metres of space dedicated to a wide variety of subjects, including even astronomy, it is truly one of the best science museums in the world.
It would not suffice to rush through so much of history and art in a day or two. The best way to soak it all in would be a stay for a few more days at vendita appartamenti milano which provides very good accomodation. So stay, visit the magnificient works by geniuses and relish them all.

I have to do some sort of impressionism art for my art class?
>.< Question: does it have to be a painting??? Because I'm used to a pencil and paper as my weapon. Probably is, ha ha, just wondering. And so could someone give me some tips??? The best thing I've ever painted is a pretty amateur Calla Lily... actually besides finger painting when I was a munchkin I think that about covers it in my short thirteen years of inexperienced life. >.< So yeah, I'm used to sticking with sketching and drawing, and I would just like some tips on impressionism. Also... I live in LA and there's nothing really that pretty around me to paint the impression it gives me. Does it have to come from an actual scenery or landscape?

Hi Shelby, When the impressionist era set forth its beginnings, it was intended to present an 'Impression' by an artists in a brief glimpse. Color and light were to be advanced and captured changing light and weather conditions. it is an interesting art era and I appreciate your conviction that your work will need to be a drawing as this is what I favor myself. Painting of all types I can do yet I always return to drawing. What I found useful was using lets say water color to create the sky, on water color paper I would do much of the coloration then come back and lay in the detail with pen and ink. I would also use prismacolor pencils to develop the color tones I needed to create shadows and bright spots in a landscape. This same technique can be used for and subject you choose, its always works. So, play a lot with the color and light, allow the highlights to contrast the light, use color to do this and well and keep you shadow obvious.
This is making want to another piece but, I hope this has helped some.

Using Claude Monet's style, how can I create a piece of art work using impressionism?
I need to create a work of art with oil pastels using Monet's impressionism style, but I don't know how. How do you create art like an impressionist? What am I suppose to draw? Does what you draw matter? How do I draw it?
These paintings usually consisted of visible brush strokes using bright use of light and varied colors. Black was rarely used. Works many times emphasized lighting and its qualities, every day subject matter that was viewed from unusual angles.
Instead of mixing colors as was typical of the masters, colors would have been placed side by side thus blue and yellow would give the "impression" of green.
Perhaps look at some modern day impressionist and you will be helped to find your inspiration. Do not limit yourself or you will be trying to copy rather than create.
