How can I explain to kids the difference between nudity as art versus nudity as sexy or shameful?
I'm trying to expose my kids to classic art, and they get grossed out at the nudes like Michelangelo's David, etc. How can I get them to appreciate nudity in art instead of seeing nudity only as sexy or shameful?
Also, how could I explain this to kids in a Girl Scouts troop who come from religiously conservative families?
it's not sexy or shameful but beautiful... it's not shameful but sacred... it's not but an offering to god and in his eyes we are naked like this?
if i were you i wouldn't try to make them appreciate this instead of that. i'd explain what's this certain painting all about rather. like, what adam and eve doing there, what's that place, what is going to happen, what the story says. i'd go explain an eros painting with mythology, who he was, what he was doing with his bow... i wouldn't go say things like, don't look at the penis or without a question asked "he is naked because..."
as long as mythological figures, gods or scenes from heaven or whatever it's easy to say "they don't need clothes because..." though.
and i'm not sure if seeing something as sexy is as bad as you think. much better than seeing it in playboy i guess.
