The Hindu Goddess Kali is known as the consort of Lord Shiva, and sometimes referred to as the supreme mistress of the universe in her role of creating and destroying worlds. She represents eternal energy, time and change and the slaying of demons. Her fierceness is indicative of her great transformative power.

Kali is represented as being black or very dark blue, often associated with her ability to absorb and dissolve all other colors, becoming the ultimate reality, the all-consuming source of life. Kali is portrayed with four arms. One hand holds a sword and another the head of a demon she has slain. The sword represents a sword of knowledge, cutting through the knots of ignorance and destroying human delusions.

The other two hands beckon her worshippers. Kali is also depicted as being nude, symbolizing an illumined consciousness unencumbered by the clothing of maya and illusion. It is said that she blesses her devotees by cutting them free from the cycle of karma.

Kali is sometimes portrayed dancing in the cremation grounds, representing the goal of her devotees to overcome the fear of death, as well as pain, sorrow and decay, by approaching and confronting these realities of life. Her dance is a celebration of the hearts of those who have followed a path of purification and renunciation.

Acceptance of mortality, as well as life's suffering, frees the disciple to sing and dance and experience life joyfully.

Despite her fearsome countenance, Kali is also known as a Mother Goddess, and her followers experience a close loving bond with her, as with mother and child. Those who earnestly seek the knowledge of God, revere Kali as a Divine Mother. Kali is worshipped most devotedly in the Indian state of Bengal and is represented in Bengali literature. The famous Indian saint Ramakrishna was devoted to Mother Kali and relentlessly sought her favor and blessing.

The Bengali saint Paramahansa Yogananda was also devoted to Kali, saying she heard and answered his prayers. Yogananda went on to bring meditation and Eastern teachings to America in the 20th century. His best-selling book, Autobiography of a Yogi, recounts his many spiritual adventures and his devotion to Kali.
