What is the copyright law on reproducing paintings by famouse artists?

I don't know if it's a matter of copyright (someone else can answer this better than I can) if the artist is VanGogh or Rembrandt... someone who is no longer alive. The question for me would be is it ethical. And would I want to risk getting a reputation as an artist who copies other artists' work rather than producing my own creative ideas. If you're talking about a single painting that you did in order to learn the techniques of another artist, and you want to sell that piece to a relative, friend, or acquaintance, I don't think there would be any problem with that. But if you're talking about actively reproducing famous works of art for the purpose of selling them... I don't think that's something I'd be willing to do.
