Picasso painted or drew his model Sylvette dozens of times -- at least 40. He was a prolific artist who frequently experimented with different approaches. He'd been trained in traditional representational illusionism, so it's not surprising that he should have been interested in sketching Sylvette that way at least once, but he also used his models in his more innovative, modernist works. That was simply the way he worked.
