Putting on weight?
I am taking my horse (17.2h TBxID) to an in-hand show in 3 weeks. He looks a bit thin after the winter.
What is the best food/supplement to use to make him put on weight?
He cannot go out at the moment because its too wet.
At the monet he has 2 large scoops on hifi lite, a scoop of conditioning nuts, one and a half scoops of speedy beet and a mug of veg oil twice daily + 2 large haynets for the night. His teeth have been done and he has been wormed. He gets ridden for an hour max 4 times a week.
Any ideas?
Take out the vegetable oil and switch the HiFi Lite for Alfa-A with oil; it's got more horse-friendly oils than the bog standard "veggie oil" out the supermarket, and Alfa is much more nutritious than HiFi.
Someone... I can't actually remember which feed company it is, it might be Dodson & Horrell but don't hold me to that! - makes a processed barley feed which is a bit like oversized cheerios. They're very palatable and not particularly heating but they will add condition. There's also the Bailey's number 1 which is like a maize mash - mix a cup or two with watered down mollasses and you've got a very tasty weight-gain feed! (And also a bit of fizziness!)
I'd also give him a balancer - TopSpec do a very general, broad-spectrum balancer with lots of vitamins and minerals; that'll help him build a little muscle and make him look and feel a bit better.
