Would it be proper to display an oil painting in a living room by resting it on a mantle and against the wall?

And NOT putting a nail on the wall? I would put mirror brackets to hold the framed painting on the fireplace mantle? Would it be proper in the aesthetic sense? Or would it look out of place or "gross"? Any suggestions you might have will be appreciated. Thanks.

have to agree with previous comments, although it depends on how you have styled your house. bearing in mind the mantle-place will not really add anything to the painting but it would depend on the mantle and also the painting. a jazzy coloured or strong grained mantle would not let a subtle painting be noticed/appreciated.
