Are procion dyes washable?

I am looking to do silk painting with 6 - 9 year olds. It claims on the websites that they are washable and you can do handprints with them. However what I remember from Art College was having a green hand for days due to putting my glove too far into the bucket. Are they really suitable to be used with 6 year olds?

You can get from the Dharma Trading company, the same company that sells the procion dye, a dye remover for hand clean-up called
Rudaran (sp) it's about $6 a tube and would last quite a while.
If you go this route- be sure to follow the instructions.
Rudaran works best when first applied to dry hands. Rub it it for a while and then add a very small amount of warm water and rub again.
If all the dye does not come off the hands, the hands will have to dry for a while before washing again. But, this does not get the dye out from under fingernails and such.
Procion is pretty serious stuff when it comes to leaving a mark on what ever it touches.
I have done work with Procion dyes for over 20 years and the #1 rule I tell everyone when they want to help...- DON'T SPILL THE DYE -

Personally, I would not use procion to make handprints. It would require extra additives to stablize the dye for this sort of project.

There are many different dyes out there these days, call Dharma Trading, they are very friendly and helpful people.
They might be able to suggest a dye that is easier to clean up.
Perhaps a fabric paint would be better.
