Suggest a book that will help me in understanding the basics of modern / abstract art.?

I try to understand the logic behind the idea when an eye extends beyond the boundary line of face in a painting!

I think you may be using logic where it's not appropriate. It sounds like you're trying to comprehend cubism, which in it's essence is derived from African or tribal art of the early 20th century, and that progenitor of Modern art, 'ol Picasso, basically stole the stylistic form in order to create meaning beyond the normal bourgeois understanding, and, depending upon your opinion, transcend beyond the logical, or forever confuse people.
It would be worth it to check out other non-cubist forms of abstract art, like expressionism, abstract expressionism, minimalism, some forms of pop, and certainly contemporary abstract art ( which may seem all over the place, but that okay because it's really just post-modernism in disguise). Despite what some may say, I don't think it's necessary to appreciate early abstract art before later forms. Keep your mind open and just react to what you like visually, and you can really gain an appreciation for abstraction past what you can read in any book.

That said, here are a few recommendations:

History of Modern Art : Painting, Sculpture, Architecture & Photography
by H. H. Arnason , Maria F. Prather , Marla F. Prather H. Horvard Arnason - this one seems to be the most comprehensive, understandable, and has good reproductions, but is super big.

I have another textbook , Gardner's Art through the Ages volume 2; although the modern coverage is only the last bit of the book, it's pretty basic and straightforward.

If you're more interested in the thought behind certain art movements, the "Art In Theory" series are really great anthologies of writings about art, and are semi-chronological. because it's a collection of authors, though, some of the articles are rather hard to understand, especially if you're still in high school or early college, but it has the greastest collection of the quintessential writings.
